The politics of investing
Good morning!
In my recent reader survey more than one of you asked about the impact of politics on the stock market.
And it just so happens that early last week I was on a call with Schwab's Managing Director of Legislative and Regulatory Affairs.
Among the many things that were covered was this slide which I found interesting:
It shows that whether Democrats control the White House and Congress or the Republicans control the White House and Congress, it makes virtually no difference over time.
Note: these numbers are based on the Dow Jones Industrial Average going back to 1901, and as I've written before, the "Dow" isn't really the market.
Still, the guy from Schwab said that most often the Democrats or Republicans control both the Presidency and Congress, so in answer to the question about the political impact on the market, I'm not sure there really is an impact over time.
Short-term, it's anyone's guess. But thankfully, we're not investing for the short-term 😉

Since 2012, Ronnie has assisted widows and widowers with the myriad of non-legal, non-financial advisory, and non-accounting/tax tasks they are faced with after the death of their loved one. And since she's a widow herself, she can speak from first-hand experience.
